Town of Mountain City

The town Mountain City, Tennessee received its name in 1885 after formally being called Taylorsville. Random Butler suggested changing the name after discovering that the town was located in one of the highest valleys in Tennessee. Doe Mountain rest to the southwest, Forge Mountain rest to the east and areas of the Iron Mountains lay just to the north allowing for a landscape surrounded by mountain tops. Mountain City was home to the first Mountain City Fiddlers Convention in 1925 which is now considered a landmark for the history of Appalachian Traditional Music.

In the 2000 census Mountain City held a population of 2,383 people residing in the town. US Hwy 421 connects Mountain City to Bristol, Tennessee in the northwest direction and to Wilkesboro, North Carolina in the southeast. The winding road of Tennessee State 67 Connects Mountain City to Elizabethton, Tennessee traveling along side of the beautiful Watauga Lake.

Hux-Lipford Funeral Home

Around 1900, R. Ross Donnelly opened an undertaking parlor in the rear of his post office at Shouns, Tennessee, just outside Mountain City. W. Y. “Bill” Hill, who was married to Donnelly’s niece, Edith Donnelly, came to Johnson County from West Tennessee in 1927 and started working for Mr. Donnelly. The name of the firm was changed to Donnelly-Hill Funeral Home. Mr. Donnelly served in the dual capacity of undertaker and postmaster until his death in 1937.

Around 1930, Mr. Hill purchased a house on Murphy Street in Mountain City, renovated the structure, and opened Hill Funeral Home. In 1954, Mr. Hill’s son, W. D. “Bill” Hill, graduated from Cincinnati College of Embalming and returned to Johnson County to work with his father. Also in 1954, Mr. Lewis Gentry, who had been employed by Hill Funeral Home, opened Lewis Gentry Funeral Home on the corner of Main and Murphy Streets. Mr. Gentry purchased Hill Funeral Home in 1962 and merged it with his funeral home at the Main Street location. Mr. W. Y. Hill retired at that time and died in 1978. His son, W. D. Hill became the manager of a local building supply company and later served as Johnson County Executive.

Charlie had spent many years serving the families of Johnson and Carter Counties, starting his career in funeral service in 1958. Charlie had been a supporter and an active member of the Mountain City Community for many years. Charlie was a good friend to all and his death was a loss to the families of Johnson County in January of 2001.

In late 2004, the building on the west side of the funeral home was purchased and remodeled into the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel.

Tri-State Growers Inc. is based in Mountain City, Tennessee is part of the foundation of Tennessee Farmers Cooperative some 70,000 farmer members. The Tennessee Farmers Cooperative and Tri-State Growers, Inc. were both chartered in 1945. Tri-State Growers Inc, has currently over 800 members. These organizations began because at the end of World War II the people of Tennessee started to show extreme high interest in forming their own business in hopes to have reliable sources of production information needed in their farming operations. Tri-States supplies the full time farmer or weekend gardener with product supplies and resourceful knowledge to meet the customers needs.

Watauga Lake Winery

Watauga Lake Winery produces wine for every palate. From a dry Seyval and Merlot wine to a sweet dessert wine. Watauga Lake Winery won two silver medals last year. Their “Laurel Creek Surprise” a raspberry, chocolate dessert wine received this award in competition at Finger Lakes, New York, and also in “The Wines of the South” competition. A Concordance Gold was won for their “Doe Mountain Red”, a dry, full-bodied Cynthiana wine, at “The Wines of the South” competition.

In addition to the tasting room and wine production area, the winery offers a full catering kitchen complete with GE monogram appliances and a meeting /dining room area which can accommodate over 100 people. The kitchen is used for weddings and other events, food and wine pairings, gourmet dinners and demonstration “hands-on” cooking events. Locally grown Tennessee farm products are featured whenever possible.

Red Tail Mountain Resort & Golf

The 18-hole “RedTail Mountain” course at the RedTail Mountain Club facility in Mountain City, Tennessee features 6,884 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 72.3 and it has a slope rating of 126. Designed by Dan F. Maples, ASGCA/Ellis Maples, ASGCA, the RedTail Mountain golf course opened in 1982.

Heritage Hall Theatre

Heritage Hall was an idea dreamed up by Evelyn Cook, former drama teacher, along with others she took the idea of renovating the old high school auditorium that closed in 1966. This new renovation gave life back into the old 1923 auditorium. Heritage Hall Theatre then opened in September, 2005 in Mountain City, Tennessee. Its believed some of the first country music broadcast was preformed on the Heritage Hall stage offering the Northeast Tennessee’s best entertainment ever! But rather your interest is in Music, Drama, Comedy or Local Community or Private Events Heritage Hall is the place to enjoy the performance. The Elizabethton Twins

The Appalachian League of Professional Baseball has released the 2014 Elizabethton Twins Baseball Schedule. The E-Twins will open the season with a three game series on the road against the Greeneville Astros on June 19, and will then return to Elizabethton for their first home game of the 2014 season against the Pulaski Mariners on Sunday June 22, 6:00PM. “We look forward to another successful season of Minor League Baseball,” said Mike Mains, Elizabethton Twins General Manager. “It gives us a chance to showcase future Major League players and most importantly allows our youth to come out and watch first hand a professional baseball player play the game.”
